Ode to the Dragon
Kang Liao
The fifth symbol in the Chinese zodiac is Lung.
The dragon is a mistranslation in the English tongue.
The Chinese legendary animal has no wings.
The western one puffs fire, the other water’s sprung.
In the orient Lung is indictive of kings,
For Lung represents all good and majestic things.
In Europe, however, the dragon is evil,
It is killed by knights to save damsels tied by strings.
But Lung and the dragon are indeed coeval.
They both were popular in times medieval.
Did Lung grow wings when it traveled to the west?
Or in the east the dragon lost the organs primeval?
Whatever the case, it always would be the best.
If we could keep the beauty and forget all the rest.
