明月几时有？When will there be the bright moon?
把酒问青天。I ask the azure Heaven, holding a cup of wine.
不知天上宫阙,I don’t know in the celestial palace
今夕是何年。In which year is tonight.
我欲乘风归去，I want to return, riding on the wind
又恐琼楼玉宇，But afraid in the jade towers
高处不胜寒。I can’t bear the chill on high.
起舞弄清影，If dancing there with my shadow
何似在人间？It’s unlike in the human world

转朱阁，Turning round the red pavilions
低绮户，Keeping low to the gauze-adorned doors
照无眠。And shining on the sleepless
不应有恨，Shouldn’t have rancor
何事长向别时圆？But why always grow round when parting?
人有悲欢离合，Humans have grief and glee, parting and meeting
月有阴晴圆缺，The moon’s now clouded, now shining, now waxing, now waning
此事古难全。This thing can’t be perfect since time of yore
但愿人长久，I only wish humans have a long life
千里共婵娟。So everyone’s fine as the moon within a thousand miles

寒蝉凄切,对长亭晚，骤雨初歇。都门帐饮无绪，留恋处、兰舟催发。执手相看泪眼，竟无语凝噎。念去去、千里烟波，暮霭沉沉楚天阔。
多情自古伤离别。更那堪、冷落清秋节。今宵酒醒何处，杨柳岸、晓风残月。此去经年，应是良辰、好景虚设。便纵有、千种风情，更与何人说。

Cicadas in cold with sad chirping,
Facing the arbor in twilight,
When heavy shower just stopping.
Drinking in the tent before the capital gate, listless,
Where we linger,
But the magnolia yacht urging to set sail.
Hand in hand, looking at each other with tearful eyes.
Speechless after all like with frozen throat.
Thinking of departing:
Through thousand miles of mists and waves,
The dusk so hazy, the southern sky so vast.
Being sentimental, always grievous of parting since time of yore.
Moreover, how can I bear
The solitary autumn season.
Where am I tonight when sober from drunkenness?
At the shore with willow trees,
With the morning winds, the lingering moon.
A year from now on,
Should be a good time,
But pretty scenes set up in vain.
Even though there are thousands of feelings,
Yet whom can I impart to?

常记溪亭日暮。 沉醉不知歸路。兴尽晚回舟。 誤入藕花深處。爭渡。争渡。 惊起一滩鸥鹭.

Often remember the arbor by the creek at dusk;
Heavily drunk, I don’t know which way to return.
When I go back in a boat at night, having fully enjoyed,
My boat is misled into the depth of lotus flowers.
Striving to go forth, striving to go forth,
Groups of gulls and egrets on the shore are startled.

A Lyric by Su Shi

(On the mid-autumn night of Bing Chen year (1076), I quaffed my wine with gusto till dawn, intoxicated, thereby I wrote this lyric when thinking of my brother, Zi You.)



Sith when was that bright moon creat’d?

I raise my winecup and ask the sky blue...

What day be tonight in Heaven? I have no clue...

I’d fain ride winds to thy Jade Tower Great,

But fear it'd be too high and too cold.

I rise to tango with my shadow,

O! Is it still the mortal world I know?

Around my red chamber the moon moveth, I behold,

Thou alight’st on the gauzed window of mine

And shedd’st thy light on sleepless me.

Oh, thou shouldst have no grudge against any,

Yet wherefore when ones part dost thou fully shine?

Man will suffer and joy or part and reunite,

Alike the moon will wane and wax or rise and sink,

Such phenomena sith the days of yore, I bethink.

Have never ever betided perfectly right.

Tho’ parted, I wish all folks a life long and hale;

The beauteous moon all enjoy will ne'er avale.

Bells In Rain

Dolefully cold cicadas are chirping;
In twilight we're the long pavilion facing,
The downpour has just ceased.
Wine in marquee set at town gate, yet woes increased,
And our feelings for each other prevail,
Oh, th' magnolia vessel urges on to set sail,
Hand in hand, looking into our teary eyes,
We choke up as if lumps in our throats, to our surprise,
Thinking of miles of brume and wave, so far away,
Clouds hang in the Southern sky, now I’m on my way.

The parting saddens the ones in love since olden day,
Yet in this bleak fall, the grief’s e’en more than I can say.
Where could I be when awaking from my drunkenness tonight?
Willows on riverside; breeze at dawn; the fading moonlight.
Alas! I might be away for years,
All gone tho’ the amazing scene still appears.
No matter how many amorous feelings I possess,
To whom could I intimately express?
