TITIAN:THE VENUS OF URBINO
Commissioned in 1538 by Guidubaldo della Rovere, the Duke of Urbino, this is one of the most famous erotic images of all time, a cultural icon. A young girl with blond hari flowing loosely over her shoulders, looks knowingly but allusively at the spectator. She is completely naked, lying on a luxurious bed with rumpled sheets; her left hand resting over the public area as if to hid it is in fact ambguously inviting. In her right hand she holds a small posy of roses, a symbol of love reiterated by the myrtle plant on the window-sill. The little dog sleeping on the bed, symbolises fidelity - like the one in the portrait of Eleonora Gonzaga - a tender and reassuring note in the scene; this carries on in the background, where two maids are looking for clothes in a rich bridal shest, in a fading sunset.
