That depends on many factors, your and his (her) computer OS, chinese software, chinese language packages.  If you and your friend both have the top and new versions of all the above items, you may have less problems.

1) How do you type the Chinese in the email or post to the Yidian, hxwz etc., you can try to use the same way first.  If it works that is fine.

but if your friend gets garbarge codes instead of Chinese, then it might be missing something in the communication process.

2) you can try to type in word, and copy and paste to the MSN.

Just use Microsoft Chinese Input

Start->Setting->Control Panel->Region Options->Input Locale

此处可以加入中文输入.
然后光标定在MSN,把输入改成"全拼"就行了
