CHINA: Reebok Names Chinese AIDS Activist Recipient of Human Rights Award

Chinese AIDS activist Li Dan was today named a recipient of shoe manufacturer Reebok's Human Rights Award. Li, who heads the China Orchid AIDS Project, "has pressured the Chinese government to respond to the country's rapidly escalating HIV epidemic and has risked his personal safety," Reebok said. Li and other activists are credited with China's shift toward greater openness about its HIV/AIDS epidemic. However, in an interview, Li said he still doubts that China is being entirely forthcoming about its true number of AIDS patients. Li set up a school for AIDS orphans in 2003; it was shuttered by authorities, and Li was detained and beaten by police after he went on TV to discuss the AIDS crisis and the closing of the school. Also receiving Reebok awards were Rachel Lloyd, an advocate for sexually exploited New York girls; Kashmiri peace activist Khurram Parvez; and Zimbabwean human rights lawyer Otto Saki. The award, which is given to advocates age 30 or younger, carries a $50,000 grant.
