You will have heard through the media of the emergence of a new strain of the Human Swine Influenza virus. While there have been relatively few cases in Canada, all Canadians are encouraged to take some simple precautions to prevent the spread of flu-like viruses while going about their normal lives, including in the workplace.
The Public Health Agency of Canada advises that good infection prevention practices can help limit the spread of this virus. Specifically, to help reduce transmission wash hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, cough and sneeze in your arm or sleeve, get your annual flu shot, and keep doing what you normally do but stay home if sick.
If you are returning from Mexico and are experiencing severe flu-like symptoms including fever, fatigue, lack of appetite, coughing and sore throat, you should consult a healthcare professional.
If you have any questions about this virus, I encourage you to visit the Public Health Agency of Canada websites www.phac-aspc.gc.ca and www.fightflu.ca to get more information about how you can help reduce the spread of influenza. You can also call the general enquiry hotline at 1-800-454-8302.
Before travelling, please consult the Public Health Agency of Canada website to determine if it has issued a travel advisory for the region you plan to visit and you are encouraged to follow those recommendations.
