原诗

I Strove With None - Poem by Walter Savage Landor

I strove with none, for none was worth my strife.
Nature I loved and, next to Nature, Art:
I warm'd both hands before the fire of life;
It sinks, and I am ready to depart.

原诗分析，翻译：

1. 原诗的形式是齐整的：四行，每行十个音节，押尾韵。

2. Strove with none，是不与任何东西相争的意思。主要指人，也即社会，与下面的大自然和艺术相对。

3. 第二行是第一行的递进，说明他为什么与世无争，因为他爱的是自然和艺术。因为第二行是第一行的加强，所以我用“我爱的是……”来译，以便它与第一行相联系。

4. 第三行在第一、二行的基础上，更进一步说出他为什么与世无争，因为有“生命之火温暖他的双手”，他可以用自己的双手做自己喜欢的事。

5. 前面三行都是过去时，第四行现在时，说的是现在。it sinks不能译成“火萎了”，读者虽然能够理解，但“萎”从不用来描写火。既然火在sinks，那就是渐渐地在熄灭，所以我把它译成“这火将熄”。

原诗的形式：

其次是艺术；

我用生命之火温暖了我的双手；

I compete with none，'cause I won't be beat,
Pacing I love，next to pacing, roaring.
On the throne，it is me who takes the seat,
I am me, nobody else，the Lion King.

我不与人争，因为我已独步天下，
我喜欢踱步，除了踱步就是咆哮。
宝座上，我正襟危坐，不怒而威，
我就是我，舍我其谁，狮子大王。

牧羊姑娘

I fight with none; for none was worth my fight.

reading I loved, and next to reading, sleep:

I washed my  face and  then turned off the light,

Tomorrow a lot to do: herd horses and  sheep.

我不与人吵，与谁吵我都不屑；

我爱的是看书，其次就是睡觉，

在关灯入睡之前，我去洗了脸。

明天很多事要做：牧羊, 放马。
