5. His String Quartet in A minor, Op. 132, written in 1825, includes a movement known as “A Convalescent’s Hymn of Thanksgiving to the Deity,” in which Beethoven expresses his gratitude over the passing of a terrible bout of illness. T.S. Eliot later wrote of this quartet’s evocation of “reconciliation and relief after immense suffering; I should like to get something of that into verse before I die.” It’s been said that Eliot wrote his “Four Quartets” in response to Op. 132.
