Morgan Invents Volleyball (1895)

William G. Morgan invented volleyball in Holyoke, Massachusetts, just four years after basketball was invented in the neighboring town of Springfield. Morgan, a physical education director, created "Mintonette" for older athletes who wanted to play indoor sports but for whom basketball was too rough. Mintonette was later renamed volleyball because the point of the game is to "volley" the "ball" back and forth over the net. Morgan's game took several of its characteristics from what two sports?

President Bill Clinton Is Acquitted (1999)

The US House of Representatives impeached President Clinton on December 19, 1998, charging him with perjury and obstruction of justice during investigations into the Lewinsky scandal. It was apparent, however, that much of the public, while fascinated by the scandal, believed the impeachment to be partisan and irrelevant to national affairs. In 1999, two impeachment counts were tried in the Senate, which voted to acquit Clinton. Who is the only other US President to have been impeached?

Scientists Announce Birth of Dolly, the Cloned Sheep (1997)

Dolly was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell through the somatic cell nuclear transfer technique, in which the nucleus of an egg cell is replaced by the nucleus of a cell from the organism to be cloned. In successful cases, the egg cell develops into a healthy fetus, but the success rate of cloning has been low. Of 277 eggs, only 29 created viable embryos; just three of these embryos survived until birth, and Dolly was the only one to survive to adulthood. How did she get her name?

At the 1996 US Postal Challenge, she became the first female skater to land a triple loop/triple loop jump combination, which became a signature element in Lipinski's performances. In 1998, she became the youngest person ever to win a gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games. Why did Lipinski stop skating in 2002?
