The Negro Speaks of Rivers

Langston Hughes, 1902 - 1967
.

I’ve known rivers:
I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the
flow of human blood in human veins.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln
went down to New Orleans, and I’ve seen its muddy
bosom turn all golden in the sunset.

I’ve known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

Here I am, quietly, bringing love and care:
I wave gently-- wiping off the clouds on the horizon,
I give a puff-- scents of flowers keep floating in the air,
Wheat  ears cheer joyfully, waiting for the harvest.

By the river, sitting a cow
she chews slowly,  enjoying a relaxing break.
The happy-go-lucky fellow
near the farmhouse, a pig is sound asleep.

The geese in the sky have a new dream to fulfill:
They fly south, in swarms,
singing all the way, they fly through seas and many a hill,
leaving mountain brooks keep running alone.

I shake my sleeves,  the pigment
I've  brought, fall on the north mountain top
where live raccoons and deer' cries there are constant,
and in the south now it becomes colorful as well.

The full moon these days has become a hook,
also appears to be like a curved eyebrow,
her forever fresh, smiley and shy look,
since ancient times, has charmed so many literary giants...

But he spoke to re-assure me,
And he kissed my pallid brow,
While a reverie came o'er me,
And to the church-yard bore me,
And I sighed to him before me,
Thinking him dead D'Elormie,
"Oh, I am happy now!"
D'Elormie

(找到了两个版本但好像译者没有理解原文或是我没理解好) D'Elormie
I am doing a big project

Thanks for the "raise"  comment,谢谢你对Raise的看法。 http://www.shmoop.com/negro-speaks-of-rivers/freedom-confinement-quotes.html

The ring is on my hand,
And the wreath is on my brow;
Satin and jewels grand
Are all at my command,
And I am happy now.

And my lord he loves me well;
But, when first he breathed his vow,
I felt my bosom swell-
For the words rang as a knell,
And the voice seemed his who fell
In the battle down the dell,
And who is happy now.

But he spoke to re-assure me,
And he kissed my pallid brow,
While a reverie came o'er me,
And to the church-yard bore me,
And I sighed to him before me,
Thinking him dead D'Elormie,
"Oh, I am happy now!"

And thus the words were spoken,
And this the plighted vow,
And, though my faith be broken,
And, though my heart be broken,
Here is a ring, as token
That I am happy now!

Would God I could awaken!
For I dream I know not how!
And my soul is sorely shaken
Lest an evil step be taken,-
Lest the dead who is forsaken
May not be happy now.

Xiaoman  Oct. 16, 2015
