I am fascinated by the recent discussions about translation on this forum. I would venture to ask some "good hands" to render some pieces for our enjoyment, not merely for the sake of appreciating one's skills, but that good writings never fail to teach us something of life. And life is so precious and unique, always in need of care and nourishment.

Here is one...


Knowledge and Virtue

Knowledge is one thing, virtue is another; good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith. Philosophy, however enlightened, however profound, gives no command over the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles. Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman.

It is well to be a gentleman, it is well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life-these are the connatural qualities of a large knowledge; they are the objects of a University. I am advocating, I shall illustrate and insist upon them; but still, I repeat, they are no guarantee for sanctity or even for conscientiousness, and they may attach to the man of the world, to the profligate, to the heartless, pleasant, alas, and attractive as he shows when decked out in them. Taken by themselves, they do but seem to be what they are not; they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers, and in the long run; and hence it is that they are popularly accused of pretense and hypocrisy, not, I repeat, from their own fault, but because their professors and their admirers persist in taking them for what they are not, and are officious in arrogating for them a praise to which they have no claim.

Quarry the granite rock with razors, or moor the vessel with a thread of silk, then may you hope with such keen and delicate instruments as human knowledge and human reason to contend against those giants, the passion and the pride of man.

你说得对,似乎大道理了些。谁想到外国人也道学呢。

不过,有时候我觉得“根本”的“道理”还是要讲的。大的是非是值得坚持的。想来你也同意。

我自己试着翻译一下,望诸位帮忙修改指正。抛砖引玉云。。。

才学是一码事,品德是另一码;世事通达并非就是善恶分明,温雅不是谦虚,目标再正大也不是信仰。哲思,无论何等明悟,也不能主宰激情,影响动机,活化原则。人文教育成就的不是基督教徒,不是天主教徒,而是文人绅士。

作个绅士是好事,见识高明,品味精致,又有一个坦诚、公道、冷静的头脑,为人处事雅而不俗,彬彬有礼,这当然是好事———这些乃博学之人固有的教养;是学府育人的宗旨。 我对此不单赞同,还想行之持之;但是,恕我赘言,它们并非圣洁, 甚至良知的保证,世俗人、纨绔子、薄幸者皆可以之装饰自己,赏人心,悦人目。就事论事,它们容易让人觉得似是而非;远而观之,浑然与德行无二,近而就之,则敌不过细辩与久察的;故而,人常常讥之为矫饰虚伪,这却并不是,恕我赘言,其本身的罪过,原因倒在于教之慕之的人们以讹传讹、以假为真,多管闲事地僭称过美了它们。

剃刃采坚石,蚕丝系瓦缶,人的学识与明辨亦当如此地至利与至微,才有望克服人的欲念和自负这样的猛兽巨怪。

原来是自己在挑战。

读了一遍,没有细推敲,翻得通顺,先赞一个,留给后人批判。

上面几句是不是这样好一些:

通情达理与道德品质无关,文雅不是谦卑, 观点的开明和正确不等于忠诚(信仰?)。

nor is largeness and justness of view faith = largeness and justness of view is no faith;
view = point of view

“Conscience”是一个很大的词,严重点,是个“要命”的词。Thomas More 囚于伦敦塔,死于Henry VIII之手者, 就在于坚持这一个词。

Quote something here from "The Last Letters of Thomas More":

Though the law of every man's conscience be but a private court, yet it is the highest and supereme court for judgement or justice.

Immanuel, you have confused me: do you mean it was really a translation from English to Chinese?  

When you say "however enlightened (philosophy is)", I understand that you are talking about the enlightenment of philosophy itself, not its effect of enlightening the mind. Since you are the translator (and the author?), you will decide what meaning this word should have.

Dear Deepblue,

Now you confused me! ha-ha-ha.

Let me explain a bit:

1. I did a translation on an English writing for reciting in order to better my poor English. I really don't know who wrote it, I would gladly give him the credit if I do. Hope the author won't jump on me as I posted it here without a "release note". If only he knows how I admire him!  

2. The translation is rendered from English into Chinese, so I do not have much a freedom to change the English. Instead, I have to ask you to help me to offer it justice by choosing the right Chinese word, which proved to be a job I took on haphazardly.

Now, sorry for burdening you with it-you are cleaning up my mess... Ha-ha-ha...
